Calum Baker

British-Iranian director Babak Jalali crafts a touching and offbeat drama about the anxieties experienced by a young Afghan woman who has emigrated to the San Francisco Bay area. First-time actor and real-life refugee Anaita Wali Zada gives a soulful lead turn as Donya, a former translator for the US Army now working in a fortune cookie factory and struggling with loneliness and insomnia. She begins seeing a therapist (comedian Gregg Turkington), whose ability to help proves limited, but a solution to her troubles may come when she impulsively writes her phone number into one of her cookies. The film opens out with an unexpected road trip in the third act that brings Donya into contact with a quiet rural mechanic, played beautifully by Jeremy Allen White. Delicately paced and gorgeously shot in black and white, this melancholy film benefits from a deadpan humour, which adds an idiosyncratic flavour to its sensitive study in displacement and yearning. But it's in that desert-bound final stretch, with its perfectly played hint of romance, that Jalali's film truly soars.
