With a high-velocity verve, Andrea Arnold's coming-of-age film blasts from gritty everyday life to magic realism and back again while barely stopping for breath. Twelve-year-old Bailey (Nykiya Adams) lives in a squat with her elder brother Hunter (Jason Edward Buda) and their chaotic but caring dad Bug (Barry Keoghan). Bug is not much more than twice the age of his son and his attentions are fixed on his upcoming wedding to Kayleigh (Frankie Box), his girlfriend of three months. Into Bailey's semi-wild existence comes a stranger, Bird (Franz Rogowski), an adult who says he is looking for his parents. It's with the introduction of this odd figure that the film takes on a more fairy-tale feel, allowing Arnold to engrossingly explore the point at which human nature and animal instinct meet. A story that partially rests on metamorphoses - from domestic to wild, from child to adult - this also represents a shift in Arnold's career from pure neo-realism to more complex forms of storytelling. For all its melancholy, Bird is carried on an updraft of hopefulness.
