This tight little thriller stars Dane Clark as James Nevill, a despairing businessman facing financial ruin. After a money-making venture falls through, he hatches a plot to pay an old acquaintance, Paul (Paul Carpenter), to murder him so that his wife will get his life insurance. After arranging the hit, though, Nevill's fortunes suddenly change for the better, but now he can't find Paul to call off the job... It's an effectively gripping tale for the era, although when watched today, the big twist is rather obvious. Clark gives an anguished central performance, and there's a surprisingly layered role for his would-be assassin, who just wants a quiet life. The only duff note lies with Nevill's secretary, played by Cecile Chevreau, who's supposed to be madly in love with her boss but displays the emotional range of a stapler. Luckily, Thea Gregory as Nevill's wronged wife adds a much-needed dose of glamour.
