Historical drama starring Trine Dyrholm. In 1402, Queen Margrete of Denmark rules her country, along with Sweden and Norway, through her great nephew Erik, the nominal king of the union. One feels compelled to pay attention to Charlotte Sieling's imposing slab of early 15th-century Scandinavian history in case there's a test at the end. Abetted by Bishop Peder (Soren Malling), Danish queen Margrete (Trine Dyrholm) has brought bellicose neighbours Norway and Sweden into the peaceable Kalmar Union under her adopted heir, King Erik (Morten Hee Andersen). However, just as she is about to marry Erik into the English royal family, a man (Jakob Oftebro) escaped from the German Teutonic Order claims to be the son she lost 15 years earlier. With much to lose whatever course she takes, Margrete is played with an affecting blend of regality and fragility by the ever-reliable Dyrholm. The support playing is equally admirable. Yet, while the production values of this epic are undeniably magnificent, the plotting is often ponderous, while Sieling and her co-writers take contentious liberties with the facts surrounding the claimaint dubbed "False Oluf". Moreover, they over-stretch in seeking to impart modern relevance on medieval attitudes.
