Summary

Epic western directed by and starring Kevin Costner. In 1860s America, pioneers are spreading out to find a new life. In Arizona, the Horizon settlement advertises itself as a place to build a home. But the land is also Apache hunting ground, and some of the warriors believe that violence is the only way to protect their future.

Kevin Costner gets back in the director's saddle, returning to the western genre he previously conquered with Dances with Wolves and Open Range. The first chapter of this epic horse opera spirits audiences to the American Civil War, examining the expansion of the Old West. Costner plays taciturn cowpoke Hayes Ellison, one of many in this ensemble who find themselves in the newly established town of Horizon. Others include Sienna Miller's Frances, a mother enduring unimaginable horrors, and Sam Worthington's US Army lieutenant, brought in to protect citizens from Apache attacks. Co-scripted by Costner and Jon Baird, this three-hour drama unfolds at a leisurely pace, capturing the rhythms of the time, with character building occasionally punctuated by some electrifying action. True, the portrayal of indigenous characters, as the villains of the piece, leaves something to be desired. But by alluding to westerns by John Ford and other classic directors, Costner crafts a film made in the finest old-school traditions. Handsome and evocative, it feels as if it belongs to a bygone era.
