Sean McGeady

Be warned: this is not Monster Hunter, the 2020 film based on the hit video game series. Instead, this lacklustre sci-fi action effort is made by Asylum, the "mockbuster" studio that is known for titling its low-budget genre rip-offs similar to those of recent releases, in the hopes that people will watch them accidentally. The film follows the US's Alien Defense Unit as it investigates a crashed alien vessel, with Tom Sizemore playing the colonel in charge of the operation. The film pilfers imagery and ideas from Predator, Independence Day and Avengers: Infinity War, but mostly consists of its small cast cavorting through scrubland, firing at cheaply rendered CG ETs. The bulk of the budget was reserved for the climactic dogfights and nuclear missile high jinks, which are the highlight of an inconsistent, illogical and unexciting movie.
