Five friends, all Marine Corps reservists in upstate New York, find their loyalties severely tested in this US drama, set during the Iraq War. The group looks up to their de facto leader, local cop Jai Courtney, though relations are fraying between him and half-brother Nat Wolff, a loose cannon facing jail time after a bar-room bust-up leaves another youth dead. Can the others continue to support their pal after they're called up to serve? Much of this is a watchable if underwritten tale of small-town friendship, competently performed and occasionally enlivened by zesty dialogue. Courtney is believably steadfast yet conflicted, though Wolf never makes us care for his volatile foil as much as the script would like us to. Matters deteriorate when the plot deploys into "men on a mission" mode, swerving towards an unpersuasive action-driven movie rather different to the steady character fare that previously held our attention. A decidedly mixed bag, originally released in the US under the title Semper Fi, after the Marine Corps motto "semper fidelis".
