Summary
Meet Sam, a rebellious royal, second-in-line to the throne of the kingdom of Illyria. She is not a typical royal and doesn't really fit into this world. Unlike Sam's older sister, Eleanor, who is almost 18 and in training to become the next queen, Sam would rather rock out with her band or put on a concert to protest the monarchy, resulting in an inevitable run-in with the authorities. Queen Catherine, fed up with her daughter's behavior, sends Sam to royal summer boarding school where she discovers the school is just a ruse. Sam and the four other second-born royals learn they have superpowers and are actually there to train to become part of a very special, secret society. But this isn't the only surprise in store for Sam and her new friends as training begins. When a mysterious stranger threatens the safety of everyone they hold dear, will Sam and her friends learn how to use their powers in order to save their kingdoms?

This Disney fantasy adventure posits the fanciful idea that princes and princesses who are second-in-line to the throne ("the spares to the heir") possess unique DNA that gives them special abilities - as if all that wealth and privilege wasn't enough. In Europe's smallest kingdom of Illyria (don't bother looking it up), rebellious, rock 'n' roll-loving Princess Samantha (likeable Peyton Elizabeth Lee, from Disney's Andi Mack) discovers that she has super-enhanced senses, and then learns to hone them alongside other gifted second-born royals as part of a special fighting force. There's a villain to thwart, of course, but his plans to destroy the monarchy are somewhat excusable in a country that doesn't even permit a parliament. Aside from that, the usual superhero and spy-movie clichés are trotted out to less than thrilling effect, while director Anna Mastro makes no attempt to disguise the fact that Illyria looks a dead-ringer for downtown Toronto. Undiscerning kids may forgive the film its many foibles, but that's probably not be enough to warrant further episodes.
