Summary

Futuristic sci-fi adventure starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. In an America devastated by a war against robots, foster teenager Michelle meets a sentient bot called Cosmo, who gives her hope that the brother she thought dead may be alive. Teaming up with army veteran Keats, they set out for the exclusion zone, where robots live in exile from humans. However, sinister forces are also on their trail.

Millie Bobby Brown leads the starry cast of this underwhelming big-budget dystopian adventure from brothers Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame). She plays Michelle, a young woman in search of her missing brother who must journey across an American southwest that's been left fractured by an ongoing war between humankind and robots. On that quest, she's joined by robot Cosmo (voiced by Alan Tudyk) - who has an intriguing connection to her troubled sibling -and Keats, an irritating smuggler played by Chris Pratt. The film is adapted from an illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag, but the bleak tone of the source has been replaced by something far lighter and more sanitised, with the Russos attempting to give the material a family-friendly, Spielberg-esque quality. The result is a film that feels weightless, gesturing at better movies but without the charm or originality to pull those comparisons off. There are some impressive visual effects on show, but the film's plea to put technology aside and embrace the power of human connection feels hollow from something so clearly designed with the Netflix algorithm in mind.
