British writer/director Jonathan Glazer (Under the Skin) adapts Martin Amis's 2014 novel with this striking film set in 1940s Auschwitz. Dramatising the life of real Nazis, it revolves around Rudolf and Hedwig Höss (Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller), who live in a house just metres from the Holocaust's worst crimes. As commandant of the concentration camp, Rudolf orchestrates the mass murder happening on the other side of his garden wall, while Hedwig raises their children in wilful ignorance and even dubs herself "the Queen of Auschwitz". What follows is a veritable horror film, as Glazer opts against explicitly showing the killing of Auschwitz's prisoners, instead using the atrocities as a backdrop to the Höss's mundane lives. Smoke billows from chimneys and screams echo in the distance while the nuclear Nazi family play in their garden or nearby ash-ridden rivers. Glazer's artful approach and cold sense of remove, plus an unforgettable score from experimental composer Mica Levi, make this a deeply disturbing depiction of the banality of evil, and a Holocaust drama like no other.
