Succession creator Jesse Armstrong stays on familiar turf with this blackly funny HBO movie, centred around another quartet of mega-rich, morally bankrupt megalomaniacs. A weekend of whiskey and poker beckons for billionaires Randall (Steve Carell), Jeff (Ramy Youssef) and Venis (Cory Michael Smith), who converge at the mountaintop bolthole of fellow tech entrepreneur Souper (Jason Schwartzman). But it quickly turns out that global violence and unrest are breaking out, thanks to fake news being spread on the social media site Venis owns. Instead of catastrophe, the gang sees opportunity, and boardroom back-stabbings abound as the foursome fiddle on their phones while Rome (and the rest of the world, for that matter) burns. It's a solid set-up, but although the dialogue is characteristically pin-sharp, the plot often veers on the precipice of plausibility and tips into absurdist situations not dissimilar from those Armstrong penned in Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show. In a story about such excess, a bit of restraint wouldn't have gone amiss.
