Bart Layton (American Animals) continues to explore his interest in criminal deception with his third feature, adapted from a Don Winslow novella. Chris Hemsworth stars as elusive jewel thief Mike Davis, whose meticulously executed robberies are bamboozling the Los Angeles police, though Mark Ruffalo's cop spots a pattern. Meanwhile, Davis wants to retire, causing his disgruntled handler (Nick Nolte) to secretly enlist Barry Keoghan's smash-and-grab loose cannon to usurp Mike's lucrative last job. And where does Halle Berry's disillusioned insurance broker fit into this increasingly tangled web? The urban thriller milieu, night-time neon landscape and involving heist narrative inevitably conjure echoes of Michael Mann's classic Heat. But the screenplay carves out its own path: Hemsworth's enigmatic mystery man is no ruthless killer, while the ever-watchable Ruffalo is more dishevelled detective than slick supercop. Layton sustains the slow-burning tension, punctuated by some riveting chases, as the characters circle one another on the way to a nerve-jangling, edge-of-the-seat climax where the outcome is anything but predictable.
