Summary
Courtroom thriller starring Melanie Griffith and Tom Berenger. Top defence lawyer Kitt Devereux (Griffith) reluctantly takes on the case of a rap star accused of murder. Her task is made harder by an ex-husband (Berenger) at the DA's office and an interfering presidential candidate, not to mention her own doubts about her client's innocence.

The fact that the lower-billed 1980s rocker Huey Lewis gets more screen time than male lead Tom Berenger, and gives a better performance, is just one of the many bizarre aspects in this highly contrived courtroom drama. As the attorney defending a rap star against murder charges from prosecutor and ex-lover Berenger, Melanie Griffith reminds viewers of a snotty teenager trying out for a school play. The proceedings, especially towards the end, are so jam-packed with wild plot twists, subplots, and unnecessary details that it comes close to being entertaining in its badness. However, director Randal Kleiser shows no sign of a sense of humour, and makes everything so overly slick that even the opening credits generate a headache.
