Dave Aldridge
This slick if barely credible suspense yarn stars Cuba Gooding Jr as a disbarred lawyer-turned-writer who appropriates a dead man's unpublished novel and passes it off as his own. The novel becomes a huge hit. But Gooding Jr is hauled up on homicide charges when killings in the book are found to mirror real-life murders and include details that only the killer himself could have known. The film hinges on a daft piece of deception and some of the dialogue, especially Gooding Jr's voiceover narration, tries too hard to sound hardboiled. But it's stylishly made and well acted by a quality cast that includes Tom Berenger, Eric Stoltz and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Secret and Lies).
