Summary

Built around two beautifully nuanced performances, this warm-hearted Iranian romantic drama proves you're never too old to fall in love or to break the rules. Mahin (Lily Farhadpour) is a 70-year-old widow whose life, while not isolated, is stuck in a rut. Inspired in part by a lively conversation with friends, she decides to change that. Soon, she orchestrates an encounter with cabbie Faramarz (Esmaeil Mehrabi), who is also 70, at a restaurant. A ride home turns into a night of rebellion as the pair bond over wine, chat and dancing. The playful but heartfelt turns from the two leads would make this a treat in any cultural setting, but given the context of the country's theocratic regime takes on an extra, subversive layer. Simply being alone together at night is a political act - and that's before the illegal drinking and a moment in which Mahin locks horns with the hijab-obsessed "morality police". Mahin and Faramarz are all too aware that time is a precious and ephemeral commodity and neither they, nor directors Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha, waste a moment of it.
