Summary

French director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet) smashes together the crime drama and the modern musical with uneven results in this bizarre Spanish-language film, adapted from his own stage operetta. It's the tale of a Mexican drugs baron (Karla Sofía Gascón) who completes gender-reassignment surgery and begins a new life as Emilia Pérez, human-rights advocate. Her reluctant aide in this moral mission is attorney Rita Moro Castro (Zoe Saldaña), who acts as our narrator and the film's often sceptical conscience. Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz round out the main cast as, respectively, Emilia's ex-wife and new paramour. Audiard admitted to doing almost no research into Mexico or the experiences of transgender people, and the film's palpable lack of specificity makes for often airless drama. However, by focusing on a broader allegory about identity and redemption, the director does throw in some vaguely provocative ideas that give his award-winning quartet of women some material to play with. The quality of the songs and their presentations vary, and the film's pacing is often surprisingly sluggish, but you might find yourself applauding the sheer audacity of Audiard's semi-operatic vision. The film was nominated for 13 Oscars, winning just two, making it simultaneously one of the institution's most recognised films ever and its joint-biggest loser (alongside The Turning Point and The Color Purple). Nothing could better summarise Emilia Pérez's divisive response.
