A star rating of 2 out of 5.

In 1971, producer Aaron Spelling tried to launch a western TV series. Yuma served as the feature-length pilot, and the creaky result makes it clear why the show never happened. Clint Walker stars as a new sheriff who arrives in the dusty town of Yuma, determined to lay down the law. After a stagecoach is hijacked, he corners the two men responsible and, consequently, makes himself a target for revenge. Already a western veteran thanks to the hit TV show Cheyenne, Walker is the one redeeming feature of this hackneyed affair. The story is overfamiliar and the production values are shocking, with everything from Ted Post's sluggish direction to the stage-set lighting appearing cheesy and artificial. Walker, however, is a rock-hard presence, and watching him slowly raise an eyebrow while he's being threatened might have been enough to make even Clint Eastwood tremble. He surely deserved better than this stodgy nonsense.
