This muddy and bloody period horror sees a monstrous folkloric creature reanimated in an unexpected form. In the rural backwaters of plague-infested 17th century Lithuania, a small Jewish community comes under attack from gentile peasants who blame Hebrew hoodoo for the Black Death. The settlement's rabbi turns to prayer, but his childless daughter-in-law takes a more proactive approach, attempting to create a golem from mud like the legendary hulking beast that protected the Jewish ghettos in Prague centuries before. What she awakens is something very different, and far deadlier. This English-language Israeli film is a stylishly shot, slow-burn creature feature oozing with esoteric detail. For much of the running time it's an edgy character drama punctuated by moments of brutality, before going full-on splatter for the climax. The change of gears isn't totally convincing - fans of gonzo horror may grow restless waiting for some gore, while psychological horror fans may find the climax risible. But the re-imagined golem is a intriguing twist that reflects the film's ambitious and intelligent themes.
