Two lonely souls find each other in this deliciously deadpan comedy drama. In a sparse-looking Helsinki, construction worker Holappa (Jussi Vatanen) meets Ansa (Alma Pöysti), a sweet-natured supermarket employee. They go on a date to the cinema to see Jim Jarmusch's zombie comedy The Dead Don't Die before fate gets in the way. To medicate the misery of his existence, Holappa drinks heavily, something Ansa won't accept. In the backdrop, news of the Russian invasion of Ukraine plays on the radio. Written and directed by Finnish icon Aki Kaurismäki (The Other Side of Hope), Fallen Leaves clocks in at 81 minutes, and not a second is wasted. Capturing Finland's capital with that mournful palette only Kaurismäki seems to manage, the mood may be downbeat in the film's grim-looking karaoke bars, whose patrons stare into their beers, but the director's wry, sly take on love and life is bursting with belly laughs. Vatanen and Pöysti deliver their lines as if they've been living in Kaurismäki-world their whole lives.
