Jamie Healy

Like a particularly gripping episode of Casualty, director Johnnie To's crime thriller plays out in the wards and waiting areas of an average hospital. The trio at the heart of the plot comprises an overworked female neurosurgeon (Zhao Wei), a police detective (Louis Koo) and the criminal in his custody (Wallace Chung), who has a bullet lodged in his brain. Despite his precarious physical condition, Chung delights in goading his cop captor, not least because it was during police questioning that he was shot. Other murky moral choices are made during To's slow-burn offering, which bides its time detailing the various life-and-death dramas of the other patients, before erupting in a slo-mo action set piece that's worth the price of admission alone. That one instance of shameless showboating aside, the director keeps a tight rein on proceedings, with Zhao making the biggest impression as a dedicated but believably flawed medic.
