Food is the language of love in this sumptuous French drama starring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel. Adapted from a novel by Marcel Rouff, the story is set in a chateau in 1885 France where revered gourmet Dodin Bouffant (Magimel) and his chef and lover Eugénie (Binoche) cook for esteemed gourmands. Dodin is dubbed "the Napoleon of Gastronomy", but Eugénie is every bit his equal, and when she turns down his hand in marriage, despite some regular late-night trysts, he decides to cook for her. From a giant vol-au-vent and pot-au-feu to baked Alaskas and poached pears, the dishes are luxuriously presented by Vietnamese-French director Tran Anh Hung, meaning this is a foodie film to rival Babette's Feast. But there is substance with the sustenance, as the film proves deceptively rich despite a plot not thickened with much conflict. In particular, it's the chemistry between former partners Binoche and Magimel that makes the film a sensory feast to send hearts fluttering as well as stomachs rumbling.
