Set in small-town Arkansas, this revenge thriller treads familiar ground. Billy Magnussen's Lucas Frost is about to start a new life with his fiancée, Emma (Alexandra Shipp), which means he's waving goodbye to his drug-dealing family. But tragedy strikes, leaving Lucas determined to hunt down who is responsible. Awkwardly, that could be his cousin and rising drug lord Sid (James Badge Dale). Want to know just how evil Sid is? During an uncomfortably long diner scene, he defiantly chews with his mouth open (steer clear if you suffer from misophonia!). Inevitably, double-crosses ensue; men are shot left, right and centre; and Lucas is the steel-jawed, sad-eyed avenger at the heart of the commotion. For a story we've seen so many times before, writer/director John-Michael Powell seems unwilling to add anything unexpected. Yet, the cast have a decent line in "sweaty brooding" and the violence is almost Tarantino-level over-the-top - making this rather enjoyable, if unnerving at times.
