James Mottram

Overlooked English artist Audrey Amiss is granted a sensitive biopic here, thanks to a compassionate portrait by writer/director Carol Morley and her sublime star Monica Dolan. Amiss trained at the Royal Academy, but experienced bipolar disorder among other issues during her life. Morley's film unfolds like an odd-couple road movie, with Amiss convincing her social worker Sandra (Kelly Macdonald) to journey from London to her home town of Sunderland, where Amiss believes her unrecognised work will finally get exhibited. Amiss's story could easily have been turned into a mawkish look at mental health, but Morley (The Falling) offers an on-the-nose depiction of her subject's troubles, one that never feels sad or sentimental. Dolan (TV's Mr Bates vs the Post Office) is quite wonderful in a rare but richly deserved lead role, in what is a quirky, charming tribute to an unsung, unique creator.
