Summary

This sequel to the 2016 Disney smash sees the return of the titular Polynesian chieftain's daughter. Three years after the events of the first film, Moana (voiced by Auli'I Cravalho) sets sail across Oceania after her ancestors implore her to help break a curse on the island of Motufetu. Among her crew is the nerdy youngster Loto (Rose Matafeo), white-haired farmer Kele (David Fane) and buff young Moni (Hualalai Chung), who has a man-crush on demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson). Characterised by bright, breezy and beautifully detailed animation, the film does a good job in paying homage to Polynesian myth and culture. However, the film suffers for not trying anything new with its characters or setting. Co-directors David Derrick Jr, Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller struggle with a jeopardy-free plot that frequently veers off course, while the absence of Lin-Manuel Miranda is felt in the songs by Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow, which don't live long in the memory. Johnson has a ball, though, and Cravalho injects proceedings with plenty of enthusiasm. The result is a sequel that is as lightweight as a Pacific breeze.
