A young woman's passion for motorbikes propels French writer/director Lola Quivoron's dynamic feature debut. Newcomer Julie Ledru takes the lead as a working-class tearaway whose love of speed verges on the spiritual. After stealing a bike, she latches onto a macho dirt-bike crew and gradually engages in high-risk criminal activities. Drawing on the talents of a pitch-perfect cast of non-professionals, Quivoron portrays this "asphalt pirates" subculture with raw authenticity. Ledru is terrific in her role, mixing wildness and wind-in-the-hair glee with a surprising warmth in her scenes with a gangster's wife (Antonia Buresi). Handheld camerawork helps to ground and energise the action, while a kinetic heist sequence and a startling final twist boldly change the genre gears. With its mood and momentum bolstered by Kelman Duran's rousing score, Rodeo fuses realism, wheelie-pulling thrills and an almost western-style fatalism with bracing confidence.
