Based on a novel by Tamta Melashvili, the third feature from Georgian director Elene Naveriani is a poignant treatise on second chances. Having almost fallen into a ravine when becoming distracted by a blackbird while blackberrying, 48-year-old shopkeeper Etero (Eka Chavleishvili) returns to her remote village and seduces her married delivery driver Murman (Temiko Chichinadze) on the shop's cellar floor. Scarred by years of mistreatment by her father and brother following her mother's early death, Etero has defiantly gone her own way, even though the other women in the village scorn her for failing to have a family. But Naveriani allows Etero to enjoy the sensation of being loved and, in so doing, passes comment on the status of women in Georgia and wider society's attitudes towards beauty, desire, and age. Reacting to joy and adversity with deadpan dignity, Chavleishvili gives a compelling performance that is enhanced by the stillness of cinematographer Agnesh Pakozdi's delicately lit images, the measured pace of the editing, and the autumnal hues that make the interiors so cosy and the exteriors so laden with possibility.
