Summary

Elite military recruits fight for survival against an unimaginable threat in an action-packed sci-fi thriller directed and co-written by Patrick Hughes, who previously made The Hitman's Bodyguard and its sequel. 81 (Alan Ritchson) is one of the most promising candidates among the current intake of soldiers hoping to be accepted into the 75th Ranger Regiment commanded by Sergeant Major Sheridan (Dennis Quaid). He is determined to be faster, stronger and smarter than other recruits including 7 (Stephan James) and 44 (Alex King) and impress his Squad Leader (Jai Courtney). During the final stage of the US Army Ranger selection process, 81 and his brothers in arms encounter an otherworldly killing machine with firepower and tracking capabilities that reduce them to prey awaiting slaughter. Alone in the wilderness with their training and each other to rely upon, the soldiers rally in adversity.

Alan Ritchson - the man-mountain best known as Amazon Prime's Jack Reacher - pivots to sci-fi with this enjoyable actioner. He plays a taciturn soldier, known only as "81", who joins an elite US Army Rangers training camp. With a tragic past in Afghanistan, he's still fighting monsters in his head. Yet, 81 and his squad must soon fight real monsters in the Colorado mountains as they're hunted by a deadly alien robot. Crossing The War of the Worlds with Black Hawk Down, this begins as an unashamedly jingoistic celebration of the US military but morphs into an oddly charming celebration of Ritchson's impressive screen presence. He doesn't rip off his shirt, oil up his pecs and chomp a cigar like Arnie in his 80s heyday, but he's no less robust - and with a sensitive side on top. That said, the film also delights in showing blood, bones and guts, so be warned if you're not in the mood for a glut of flying viscera.
