A star rating of 4 out of 5.
Adrian Turner
This is director Billy Wilder's bittersweet tale about a fabled, Garbo-esque star of the 1930s who appears to have the secret of youth and lives in seclusion in Corfu. William Holden, the hero of Wilder's Sunset Blvd, is the independent producer who worms his way into Fedora's secret and tries to coax her out of retirement. Yes, there are flaws and some unintentional laughs - Michael York as a living screen legend? - but this is also a richly comic, deeply melancholy movie, enriched by Wilder's long perspective on the picture business. It is both Holden and Wilder who explain their career problems: "the kids with beards have taken over," meaning Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. And when Henry Fonda pops up to present Fedora with an Oscar and says, "Hello, I'm Henry Fonda," movie fans everywhere will dissolve in tears.
