Summary

Romantic drama starring Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni and Brandon Sklenar. Florist Lily Bloom meets handsome neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, but his volatile behaviour brings up painful memories of the domestic abuse she witnessed as a child. She eventually succumbs to Ryle's overtures, but matters become complicated when Atlas, her first love from school, re-enters her life.

The big screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover's 2016 million-selling novel walks an often uneasy tightrope between melodrama and menace. Blake Lively stars as a florist who embarks on a romance with what appears to be her perfect man (Justin Baldoni, who also directs) - but as the dynamic between the lovers shifts, she senses worrying parallels with her parents' previous violent relationship. The mix of harrowing domestic abuse and starry-eyed Hallmark sensibilities is arguably easier to pull off across close to 400 pages of print than on screen. Here, screenwriter Christy Hall isn't quite so confident when switching back and forth between tones, so while the narrative itself is sturdy enough, the constraints of a cinema running time leads to a sacrifice of nuance. Nonetheless, Lively does well as the conflicted star of the piece, assured at every point of her character's emotional journey. Baldoni is less convincing, but there's strong support from comedian Jenny Slate as Lively's best friend.
