Inspired by unlikely real-life events, this uplifting drama follows an introverted and failing schoolboy (Nathan Gamble) through a life-changing summer. He discovers an injured dolphin stranded on the beach and makes a desperate phone call for help to the local marine hospital, which marks the beginning of a journey of recovery for both animal and boy. Morgan Freeman is his usual entertaining self as a prosthetics expert at a veterans' hospital, and Harry Connick Jr plays the widowed father battling to keep the marine facility open against the threat of developers, with the help of his old-salt dad (Kris Kristofferson) and impossibly chirpy daughter (Cozi Zuehlsdorff). There's little point in berating director Charles Martin Smith for milking every moving moment for maximum emotion: the true story of Winter the dolphin's battle to survive is an affecting one, so maybe the film can be forgiven for occasionally ladling on the schmaltz.
