Tom Dawson

Spanning several decades in mid-20th-century France, this sweeping melodrama from writer/director Katell Quillévéré (Heal the Living) tells the story of a couple, both of whom are driven by profound feelings of shame. They first meet on a Brittany beach in 1947, where young single mother Madeleine (an impressive Anaïs Demoustier) works as a waitress at a hotel restaurant. She initially tells archaeology student François (Vincent Lacoste), who's estranged from his wealthy family, that her son's father died in the war, omitting to mention that the father was an occupying German soldier. As they prepare to marry, he keeps secret his own desires towards men. Along Came Love is no dusty period drama: favouring hand-held camerawork, saturated colours, and motifs of mirrors and staircases, Quillévéré ensures there's a vibrancy to the storytelling, which moves smoothly between periods of time. There are missteps, including a problematic ménage-à-trois with a Black American soldier, yet the film poses interesting questions around the nature of coupledom, emotional compatibility and parental love.
