On Christmas Eve in 2011, Norwegian film-maker Maria Sødahl was told she had terminal cancer and not long to live. This lightly fictionalised drama about the events of the next seven days follows Anja and Tomas - stand-ins for Sødahl and her husband - as they come to terms with the diagnosis, squeeze information from the health system and attempt to fix their troubled relationship. All this, plus Christmas and New Year celebrations to endure. Andrea Braein Hovig and Stellan Skarsgård give pitch-perfect performances as the scared Anja and stunned Tomas, and they're assisted by a talented ensemble cast as their large blended family. It's more a hymn to the joys of family life than the traditional terminal-illness weepie. Sødahl's loose, eavesdropping style helps to convey both the highs and lows in an intimate way that never feels forced or gratuitous, making for a film that is bold, unusual and even, at times, uplifting.
