While not much of an improvement over the original 2011 Uruguayan horror, at least Open Water co-directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau admit to faking the supposedly "real fear in real time" gimmick in their American remake. Instead - as in Hitchcock's Rope - ten elongated takes tell the re-jigged story of Elizabeth Olsen renovating the family holiday home while fending off mysterious entities that make doors slam, floorboards creak and grab her from the shadows. Are the ghosts real or symbolic of repressed childhood trauma? Olsen is a terrific actress and capably goes through the exhausting cycle of panicky breakdowns among the collective haunted-house clichés. But as much of the running time is taken up with her roaming hesitantly through dark rooms, the directors have a hard time sustaining the tempo and the creepy atmosphere.
