A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In this splendid drama, which was nominated for 11 Oscars but, astonishingly, won none, the American Ballet Theatre stops off in Oklahoma, reuniting two former colleagues - Anne Bancroft, now prima ballerina in the company, and Shirley MacLaine, who opted for marriage and children. In the course of the movie both wonder whether they made the right decision, each wanting what the other has got. They finally come to terms with their lives and futures through the fate of MacLaine's daughter (Leslie Browne). Much of the same ground was covered by that other ballet favourite, Powell and Pressburger's The Red Shoes, but here the dancing is relegated to second place behind the drama. Nevertheless, the dance sequences - featuring many of the stars of the day, including Baryshnikov and Sibley - are intoxicating, which more than makes up for Bancroft's lack of ballet skill.
