Summary

Sci-fi drama starring Danielle Deadwyler, Aldis Hodge and Edwin Hodge. Staying at a secluded family property with her husband and his brother, grieving mother Vanessa takes a solo walk into the woods where she encounters a woman who seems to be her doppelganger. Is this just a hallucination - or could there be an alternate reality in which her son is still alive?

A bracingly different sci-fi drama - only three characters, a forest location and hardly a special effect in sight - this remake of Chinese original Parallel Forest sticks faithfully to its cool, lo-fi template. The action is shifted to an American lakeside where grieving mother Vanessa (Danielle Deadwyler) begins to wonder if there's an alternate reality where her child is still alive. Meanwhile, her husband and his brother (Aldis and Edwin Hodge, who also wrote the screenplay) grow increasingly troubled by Vanessa's behaviour. Kourosh Ahari directed the similarly high concept Iranian horror film The Night and keeps the tone insistently sci-fi here - super-sharp looks, slinky camerawork - to stop things sliding into melodrama. Not a lot happens, but what does hits home, and it's refreshing to see skilful acting being used to separate out different iterations of the same character rather than computer trickery. Parallel is the multiverse movie for people who usually find them too hectic by half.
