James Mottram

After the original TV series (2010-15) and its two subsequent movie follow-ups, this third feature brings screenwriter Julian Fellowes's tale of the well-to-do Crawley family to a neat, if not exactly grand, close. It's now 1930, and with Downton's Lord and Lady Grantham (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern) considering downsizing, the family also faces difficulties with Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), scandalised post-divorce. Downstairs, there are retirements and promotions, with everyone a-fluster with the imminent visit of real-life playwright Noël Coward (Arty Froushan). Other newcomers include Alessandro Nivola's Gus Sambrook - a suave American acquaintance of Lady Grantham's brother (Paul Giamatti) - and ultra-pompous local Sir Hector Moreland (Simon Russell Beale, having a ball here). The multi-stranded story weaves together well enough, and returning director Simon Curtis slathers on the requisite glamour (from a trip to London to a day out at Ascot). But, lacking the withering put-downs of the late Maggie Smith's Lady Violet, the cumulative effect isn't quite Downton at its most emotional. That said, it's still watchable on its own terms and a fine way for fans to wave goodbye.
