Writer Richard Curtis (Love Actually) revisits Christmas with this twee but winning animated adaptation of his own seasonal books for children. In a seaside town, kids are in what Santa (voiced by Brian Cox) - narrating - calls a "blizzard of bother". Danny (Jack Wisniewski) wrestles with a crush at school and crises at home, with his parents divorced. Twin sisters risk getting on Santa's naughty list, and a gaggle of kids must fend for themselves when their parents get stranded in heavy snowfall. With wit and empathy, Curtis, co-writer Peter Souter and director Simon Otto toast these kids' resilience and imaginations playfully. Issues of mental health and climate change are gently touched on, and the script juggles themes, characters and tones deftly. Fine voice work helps (including Jodie Whittaker as Danny's mum), while the warm, vivid visuals pop like baubles. The gags and song choices (Coldplay, Ed Sheeran) can be broad, but That Christmas serves enough light-footed charm and cheer to earn your goodwill.
