This low-budget crime flick follows three unarmed crooks holed up in an abandoned warehouse after a heist gone wrong. The twist on that fairly generic set-up is the presence of a ferocious, blood-crazed mastiff who ensures their survival is by no means guaranteed. Adrien Brody, John Malkovich and Rory Culkin make surprisingly strong casting for what seems like a sub-Tarantino time-passer, yet a string of juicy monologues make it worth their while as we learn how they got here. Even the dog gets its own flashback, with writer/director Paul Solet clearly intending the grisly tale as an indictment of man's inhumanity to our four-legged friends. Some of the carnage is mercifully kept off-screen but the material in itself could prove upsetting for sensitive dog-lovers. Show-stopping turns from the three leads keep us distracted from the slightly contrived plotting, while Antonio Banderas is not to be outdone as a bracingly ruthless villain. It's still very much a B-picture, but done with more verve and invention than you might expect.
