As whodunnits set in schools tended to sell well, Maisie Sharman decided to team with director Stephen Clarkson to adapt Death in Seven Hours, a thriller she had penned under the name Stratford Davis. A body discovered during a game of rounders brings Inspector Gordon Jackson and Sergeant Sam Kydd to Abbotsham School, where just about everyone has a motive for murdering an unpopular teacher. Moreover, seemingly every member of the female staff could have left the size five footprint in the mud near the body. As music tutor Barbara Murray is a fan of detective novels, she tries to solve the case herself. A late twist will frustrate those who have been assiduously collecting clues. However, Clarkson (a writer directing his sole feature) makes solid use of the enclosed setting. The ensemble is admirable, while the ever-watchable Jackson works well with both Kydd and Murray, whose alibi just happens to involve a novel entitled Death in Seven Hours.
