A tearaway teen is forced to grow up fast by embracing his cheese-making heritage in this charming, unsentimental French coming-of-age tale. Deep in rural France, 18-year-old Totone (Clément Faveau) parties hard until his dad is killed in a drink-driving accident. Totone is forced to take care of his younger sister, but struggles to hold down a job. In desperation, he decides to make a cheese that is fine enough to win the 30,000 prize in a local competition, but he has to steal milk from a neighbouring farmer to do so. It sounds like a set-up for a cheesy, feel-good "triumph over adversity" yarn, but this film takes a more realistic approach, with Totone's dreams constantly given a reality check. In the end, he matures more than his cheese. With bawdy humour, gorgeous scenery, deadpan performances, adolescent cheek, fumbling sex and a far-too-detailed calf's breech birth sequence, this is a compelling debut feature from director Louise Courvoisier.
