David Parkinson
Co-scripted with two of Freud's associates, Hans Neumann and Colin Ross, this psychological film was something of a departure for director GW Pabst, who was better known for street realism than pure silent expressionism. However, there's no denying the technical ingenuity behind the symbolic dreams experienced by chemistry professor Werner Krauss, as he wrestles with the combined effects of his own sexual inadequacy and his jealous response to wife Ruth Weyher's infatuation with long-lost cousin Jack Trevor. Predominantly shot in the camera, the multiple superimpositions achieved by cinematographers Robert Lach, Curt Oertel and Guido Seeber have lost none of their extraordinary potency, although Freud, apparently, wasn't impressed.
