Summary

James Mottram

The third spin-off animated feature for Despicable Me's Minions is a blast. Set in 1920s Hollywood, it tells how the yellow-hued sidekicks (all voiced by director Pierre Coffin) got into movies. After accidentally spoiling a train robbery scene in a film directed by the diminutive Max (Christoph Waltz), the Minions become movie stars - until the arrival of the talkies ruins their careers, thanks to their gobbledygook chatter. Undeterred, Henry and James, two innovative Minions, plan their own movie. All they need is a camera and a monster. The Minions' usual anarchic chaos is shoehorned into a slightly scattershot but nevertheless enjoyable story, packed with robots, aliens and movie refs spanning everything from Airplane! to The Day the Earth Stood Still. Carried along by a strong voice cast (including Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch and Trey Parker), it may lack the misty-eyed sentiment of the Despicable Me films, but it makes up for that with a volley of visual gags. Blissful.
