Summary
On June 18, 1983, astronaut Sally Ride made history when the Space Shuttle Challenger lifted off from Kennedy Space Center and she became the first American woman to fly in space. She was part of a five-strong crew comprising commander Robert L Crippen, pilot Frederick H Hauck and mission specialists John M Fabian and Norman E Thagard. Sally was also carrying a secret into space which necessitated huge sacrifices back on terra firma. A feature-length documentary directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Cristina Costantini relives this historic moment through the eyes of Sally's life partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy

On 18 June 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space. A superb athlete, astrophysicist and astronaut, she was also a lesbian who felt forced to hide her relationship with a woman for 27 years - the fact only emerged after Ride's death in 2012. This documentary casts a measured gaze on Ride's life, featuring interviews with everyone from her icy mother to her life partner, the refreshingly honest former tennis player Tam O'Shaughnessy. We follow Ride's journey through Nasa and beyond, including her uncomfortable relationship with the press: "Will you weep if there's a problem?" sneers one journalist in an archive clip. Though the excruciating sexism and homophobia of the 80s and 90s gradually lessened, Ride still wouldn't be open about her personal life, much to her partner's despair. Cristina Costantini puts her documentary together with expert skill, notwithstanding an unsettling penchant for using look-alikes to re-enact key moments from Ride's journey. "People just don't understand what it means to fall in love with a person like Sally," sighs O'Shaughnessy as she looks back on life with her astronaut. Thanks to this film, we can try.
