Summary

Animated fantasy. In 1980s New York, Dog is lonely. Then he buys himself a mail-order metallic companion, Robot, and the two become inseparable friends. Dog and Robot spend the summer exploring the delights of Manhattan, but when a mechanical mishap befalls Robot on the beach at Coney Island, the duo find themselves forced apart. Will they be reunited?

This charming, dialogue-free animated fantasy revolves around the friendship between a dog and a robot. In an alternate 1980s New York that is entirely populated by animals, lonely Dog mail-orders himself a new pal, Robot. It's a joyous friendship until Robot runs out of power on a beach the same day it's closed off to the public for winter. Separated until the spring opening, the new friends start having dreams that reflect their worst fears. Don't be fooled by the loveable cartoon characters, as this is not a children's film (though they will enjoy much of it). There's some very sophisticated storytelling, especially in the dream sequences, alongside some bittersweet reflections on friendship. Director Pablo Berger also evocatively captures New York - the animation may appear simplistic but it's packed with astonishing detail. The result is delightfully funny, moving and intriguingly odd.
