Matt Glasby

Beginning as a "liminal space" horror in the mould of Backrooms, then slowly morphing into something quieter and more considered, writer/director Alexander Ullom's ingenious debut was made for just $80,000 and bears some surprising similarities to the work of Richard Linklater. Three Gen Z graduates - James (Phinehas Yoon), Fish (Noah Toth) and Day (Akira Jackson) - all anxious about the future, are picked up by their friend Tyler (Mitchell Cole) and take a road trip through the forest. But when they hit an unexpected dead end, they're attacked by something in the woods. And when they turn and drive away, the road ahead seems to go on forever, forcing them to explore the edges of their new reality over the coming days, which become weeks, which become months. It's a clever metaphor for the challenges faced by 21st-century youngsters, and deeply felt, with a witty script and sparky performances selling the high concept. The real danger, Ullom suggests, isn't physical but existential - this is not about how to survive life's endless endurance test, but why bother - and his conclusions push towards the profound.
