Summary

Musical drama based on a true story, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. In the late 1980s, struggling Milwaukee musician Mike Sardina and part-time performer Claire Stengl find success - and love - when they team up to form a Neil Diamond tribute act named Lightning and Thunder. However, after a tragic accident threatens their livelihood, the couple fight to hold on to their dream.

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Terry Staunton

The true-life highs and lows of a husband-and-wife Neil Diamond tribute act form the basis of this big-hearted blue-collar love story. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson star as the couple who, under the stage name Lightning and Thunder, achieve a modicum of fame beyond the humble Milwaukee tribute circuit, until an accident turns their world upside down. It's an undeniably melodramatic story, inspired by a 2008 documentary, but writer/director Craig Brewer avoids mawkishness and deftly handles the story's tonal shift from feel-good to tragedy. King Princess and Ella Anderson provide affecting support as the couple's worldly teenage daughters, but there's no doubting who the real stars of the show are. Both Jackson and Hudson are superb, providing their own impressive vocals to Diamond's music hits, and the Oscar-nominated Hudson especially is extraordinary as a woman facing up to harsh realities.
