Conceived during the making of Ti West's excellent slasher film X (2022) and shot right after that film wrapped, this prequel details the backstory of X's OAP antagonist Pearl (Mia Goth). Set in 1918, the film - co-written by West and Goth - introduces us to Pearl as a lonely young woman living on a Texas farmstead with her controlling mother (Tandi Wright) and disabled father (Matthew Sunderland). She dreams of becoming a famous dancer, and falls under the spell of a charming cinema projectionist (David Corenswet). But the harsh realities of small-town life, plus her own murderous impulses, soon derail her plans. From the sumptuous score and vibrant cinematography, to a pivotal song-and-dance number, West creates a Technicolor psychodrama steeped in classical Hollywood lore. At its centre is Pearl herself, who comes across like the love child of Carrie White and Norman Bates, and is given dignity and depth by Goth's performance. The result doesn't quite stand up on its own, but as an eye-catching origins story that casts new light on the original film, it's a malevolent marvel.
