In 1966 at the height of the Vietnam War, in a pitch battle in a rubber plantation, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers held off a force of more than 2,000 enemy Vietcong determined to kill them. Victory was claimed by both sides but it's the Anzacs that director Kriv Stenders focuses on in this "hate the conflict, love the soldier" retelling. The dynamic is Zulu (tactical ingenuity in the face of vast inferiority of numbers) meets Hacksaw Ridge (gory, attritional slaughter) with Travis Fimmel leading a fine cast as the tough-as-nails ex-commando trying to keep his men alive. The sheer visceral grimness of close-quarters fighting is what Stenders is most interested in, and he takes great pains to stop his film looking like a shoot-em-up game. A bit more time spent establishing character wouldn't have gone amiss - once the shooting really starts, it's hard to work out who's who. Put it down to the fog of war if you're feeling generous, but either way this is a heartfelt and, at times, gruesome reminder of an often overlooked chapter in history.
