James Mottram

A young Asian American teenager experiences growing pains in this tender portrait of adolescence. It follows Chris (Izaac Wang) - nicknamed Dìdi from childhood - a Taiwanese American living in California with his mother (Lust, Caution's Joan Chen), grandmother (Chang Li Hua) and sister (Shirley Chen), with whom he has a typically combustible relationship. Things aren't much better at school, where he tries to navigate friendships and dating with little success, and even his promise to film a group of skateboarders goes awry. The film is set in 2008, when MySpace and uploading videos to YouTube were all the rage, and writer/director Sean Wang captures the era with aplomb, nodding to everything from Superbad and A Walk to Remember to directors Spike Jonze and Ang Lee. A neat companion to Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade, which looked at teen years from a female perspective, the film is anchored by a terrific performance from Wang, who never overstates the painful emotions that wash over his character. Just about every note pays off.
