The world's bestselling video game comes to life with this lively, colourful blockbuster. The ever-energetic Jack Black is Steve, trapped in the Overworld, a universe where buildings can spring from your imagination. When a portal opens up, he's joined by siblings Natalie and Henry (Emma Myers and Sebastian Hansen), their friend Dawn (Danielle Brooks) and Garrett (Jason Momoa), a one-time video game champion. The group must figure their way out of this pixelated place where bees are cubic and sheep are dyed pink. While the plot is almost non-existent (there's a sorceress with an army of pigs out to steal an all-powerful orb), it scarcely matters, especially with Jennifer Coolidge on hand as Henry's school vice-principal, who romances an animated Minecraft character. Director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) just about keeps the madness on track, even if the final third descends into a tiresome battle between CG beasts. For the most part, this is heaps of fun, and the film's huge box-office success is proof that if you build it, they will come.
